 Distracting errors Aug 26, 2010

The "few mistakes" were very frustrating to me. As a one who earned a degree in French quite a few years ago, I bought this as a review. While I agree that the book can be very useful as a prep for the exam or a review for anyone who hasn't studied French in a while, I spent a great deal of time confirming that what I thought were errors actually were mistakes (in all cases I checked, they were). I don't understand why the book didn't have better proof-readers.

This book was required for my class, and I found the practice problems in it to be extremely helpful. The function-word and verb fill-ins, practice essays and speaking sections, and reading comprehension, are all on the level of the test, if not slightly harder. The actual review of french grammar was slightly skimpy, but if you have a teacher that can explain that to you, the practice in this book is worth it (hey, it got me a 5)!

Barron`s AP French, 3rd edition with 3 audio-compact discs by Laila Amiry, M.A.
seems a well-planned and organized guide.
Six chapters with the first chapter an introduction to the AP French Language Examination, 2nd chapter on Listening, 3rd one on Reading Comprehension, 4th on Writing, 5th on Speaking, 6th on Grammar Review and two appendixes for the 2 full-length practice exams. Verb charts and an index are provided .
She does provide good general information including Suggested activities and Strategies.
The guide will only improve the performance of a good student who acquires this guide at least 2 months before examination day and has been studying french at least for the past 2 years; do not expect a miracle in 2 months if you are an average, a C student.
Some concerns : the text seems to be poorly edited for the section on Grammar Review : only the correct answer is given with no explanation or reference to the particular rule. I discovered one egregious error in the answer key on the agreement of the adjective placed before or after the noun. Page 277, exercise B. I nos. 5 and 6 .

I bought this for my daughter the week before her AP test as a final prep task. She completed the entire book in a few days and found it very useful. She recognized a number of problems she covered in this practice book on the actual exam. As compared to the AP study book she used in her French Class, she said it was much more useful.
