| | Description | An Environment That Sustains Life, Hope, Honor and Destiny! In this powerful, revelation-packed book, Danny Silk describes the significant paradigm shift in church life, government, and relationships that has created and sustained the revival culture at Bethel Church in Redding, California. Through many relevant and true-life stories, the church is revealed as a place of freedom, respect, empowerment, and healthy discipline (not punishment). Culture of Honor challenges the status quo of church leadership structure and presents a refreshing view of the five-fold ministry. Jesus acknowledged this important principle in Matthew 20:25-26: But Jesus called them to Himself and said, 'You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. If those with power learn how to empower those around them, then surely it will come to pass that, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. You can apply-today-the truths revealed in this practical yet supernaturally charged set of principles to relationships in your family, workplace, community, ministry, church-wherever you deal with others. | |

Character is the ceiling of the supernatural Dec 23, 2009
By I. Carroll I first went to Bethel, Redding in 2007. The conference was great, the healings were remarkable but I had a couple of other takeaways. The biggest was the culture of honor.
As a pastor of a Vineyard church, I have loved Bethel's clarion call to get back to our basics - signs wonders and the demonstration of the Kingdom. Seeing how crucial the culture is to sustaining this has been so helpful. This book and the teachings are all about our character. How we deal with loving our neighbor as ourselves.
I have listened to everything Danny teaches about this and it has still left me wanting more. Perhaps I am looking for a list of 'to-do's', a check list of making sure I am doing this OK. Perhaps looking for rules in a culture of relationships. This book helps enormously, It helps me understand more and helps me communicate it more. Above all of that, it helps me be changed.
Don't just buy one copy, buy it for everyone you know.

A book to spark reformation in the Church and beyond Dec 28, 2009
By A. Mason It is time for our Churches to re-align with the government and culture of Heaven. As we do this we will see a flow of Heaven that floods the Earth 'as the waters cover the sea'. This book clearly outlines the culture to sustain revival and what it takes to embrace it. Read this book if you want to see Heaven on Earth but beware that you may be challenged in the way you view modern 'church' and your role in it.
The final chapter 'Revolution to Reformation to Transformation' was the best for me in both summarising the purpose of the book and igniting a flame within me to see Jesus get what He paid for in the Earth....NOW.

Like Rocky Road ice cream, with real rocks. Jun 27, 2010
By theleopard I hate to rain on this overwhelmingly positive parade of reviews, but someone has to say it.
We used this as a study book for our home group. At first, I thought I was seeing things, but the further I read, the worse it got. There are some very good points in this book. The many reviews should show you that (the "ice cream"), but there are also some very, very bad things in this book (the "rocks"). I can only highlight a few.
For me, the biggest mistake is Silk's effort to try to replace the current church hierarchy of a pastor down pyramid organization with an apostle down pyramid organization. I make this point because he hammers it from start to finish. This is one of his main points of the entire book. He begins his blueprint with 1 Cor. 12:28 (NASB) which says, "And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues." The question is, does "first" refer to priority or to chronology? If priority, then Silk is on the mark.
Let's see how that works out. Silk outlines the office of apostle, then prophet, then teacher. So far so good. Then the model begins to break down and Silk ignores the rest of the list. Here's what the full hierarchy of authority looks like with Silk's interpretation:
1. Apostles 2. Prophets 3. Teachers 4. (workers of) Miracles 5. (Those with) Gifts of healings 6. Helps (helpers) 7. Administrations 8. Various kinds of tongues
Helpers with more authority than administrators? Where are the pastors? Where are the elders? Nowhere to be seen. This clearly isn't a list of hierarchy within the church, but rather a chronology. Who establishes new churches? Apostles do. Who's first to affirm the new church? Prophets. Whose responsibility is it unify with instruction? Teachers. Administrators are those who come later in the process when the groundwork has been laid. Then, guess what? The apostle moves on. Paul was a perfect example of this.
This is no small matter. Enshrining apostles as "primary leaders" is a huge mistake. Putting people in positions they aren't cut out for is a recipe for disaster. God's design is both simple and clearly stated in scripture: First, the apostle lays the foundation for the church and when things are moving along, he appoints elders and deacons. People each exercise their gifts within this context under the guidance of the elders. It's simple. It works.
Because this new model is plagued with problems, Silk tries to ease concerns that apostles seem to ignore the needs of the people (p. 64), which is exactly the opposite of what Paul did, who provided for his own needs and all those with him on a regular basis. He was with the people side by side every day, not separated in some kind of super-spiritual role.
Teachers are the burr in Silk's saddle, whom he affectionately refers to as "... the lawyers, scribes and Pharisees of our day." (p.68). Silk finds teachers quite annoying because they believe "... the Word of God is the source of life and truth ..." Ouch! So where does Silk believe the source of life and truth is - the supernatural revelations of apostles and prophets (biblical or not because they trump Scripture). He goes on to say that it's the role of teachers to "... take the passion and the revelation of the apostles and prophets and show us how it becomes truth ..." (p. 69). What? Becomes truth? Once this door is opened, anything can come in, or "fly" in, as Silk and the group he associates with freely endorse and embrace everything from green prosperity angels to feathers from heaven as signs of God's endorsement. Maybe they are. Maybe they aren't. People need an objective, unchanging source of authority. Hmmmm, like the Bible, which states we aren't to accept anything that contradicts what they've been taught, even if it comes from an angel (Gal. 1:8).
Silk also introduces the idea that believers are "unpunishable." I get his point. Christians shouldn't be living in fear of punishment, that's true, but the idea that we are then outside the realm of God's justice is plain false. Jesus drove the point home in the parable of the unforgiving debtor (Matt. 18:21-25) where the king finally takes the man who was formerly forgiven and sends him to a debtors prison until the debt is paid. The message is as clear as can be: God's forgiveness becomes unforgiveness if we don't forgive others, hence, we always remain punishable. No need to be afraid, but we should always walk in the fear of the Lord.
There are loads more errors and mistakes, but I'll finish with these two. First, on page 96 he says that King David would be a modern day equivalent of Bill Clinton. Ah, well, with three giant exceptions: David was sorry and repented and lived an otherwise life of obedience to God. No small differences there that Silk doesn't point out. Second, on page 94 he states that Bathsheba "was an amazing woman" because she was married to Uriah, who was "stellar." No argument about Uriah, but if guilt by association is wrong, how is virtue by association right? Bathsheba wasn't raped, she was a willing party. Afterwards she didn't tell her husband. When she found out she was pregnant, she still didn't tell her husband but instead told her husband's boss - David - who promptly put in place a plan to kill him.
It seems that many of Silk's ideas are half-baked concepts that he serves without really scrutinizing them. My advice to anyone wanting to read the book is to compare and evaluate everything he says to Scripture and when the two disagree, opt for the solid rock of truth over the rocky road ice cream of man's ideas.

Changing and Sustaining a Supernatural Environment Dec 15, 2009
By Robert A. Burns
"Pastor Bob"
The church today is becoming more and more one of 'control'. It is straying away from the Great Commission...the real purpiose of the church. Rules, regulations, and controls of all types are not permitting the poeple of God to grow spiritually. Is the major problem the then 'so-called' Gfited and Called? How can anyone be a servant... a slave ... and want to treat anyone without His Grace. This book addresses just how we can sustain a supernatural enviornment in our lives. It addresses the culture of the church today and it teaches all of us the subject of honor and that 'life flows thorugh honor.' Wow this great book, from this excellent writer, teaches us what we must know to live His Grace in our lives and to grow spiritually. Read and learn how this teacher is reaching out to change the church of our loving God.

Remarkable and Life Changing Jan 19, 2010
By Nathan Beauchamp
"ConsumerAdvocate"
I've read a number of books from Bethel's senior leadership team including quite a few by Bill Johnson, one from Kris, and Danny's other book Loving Our Kids On Purpose. Of all of them, if I had to chose a favorite, CULTURE OF HONOR would be my choice. The reason is simple: this is the most profoundly impacting books I've read in my lifetime of reading Christian books of all varieties. What Danny lays out in its pages is a paradigm shift away from rules and towards relationship, away from life spent trying to control everyone and everything and towards honoring and loving one another as Christ modeled during His time on earth. Examining the scary implications of "Love always trusts," as well as laying out a common sense approach to how we can implement that into our daily lives, CULTURE OF HONOR will seriously mess with some of your preconceived ideas and perceptions about how God intends us to relate to each other.
The concept of Christians being 'unpunishable' is just so offensive in many ways. God's grace can seem offensive through our human eyes and sense of justice. It isn't 'just' that we've been let off the hook, and even more so, called Sons and Daughters because of Christ our Lord. It's easier to understand why much of Christiandom has spent the last several centuries pursuing information and rules instead of relationship when you realize how hardwired many of us are to judge and punish and make more rules so we can judge and punish even more. Culture of Honor is the answer to that human brokenness. It's the Father's original plan with relationship and love being at the very center of our existence. This is a book straight from the Father's heart.
The book is not particularly linear, because like most books from Bethel, it is derived from various teachings that were given over time. That said, Danny's books make this work better than others out of Bethel, perhaps because as Bill Johnson states in the introduction, "Danny has the best language..." for the Culture of Honor paradigm that Bethel is pursuing. Having heard Danny live in Valparaiso a year or so ago, it's pretty clear he lives-and-breathes this stuff and is passionate about seeing others implement honor into their lives, relationships, and churches.
Danny also does a great job of laying out the Five-Fold Ministry model that Bethel teaches. My one complaint with the book is that the chapter that describes the Apostle, Prophet, Pastor, Teacher, and Evangelist spends a fair amount of time discussing the pitfalls of Pastor and Teacher led churches (absent an Apostolic covering) but doesn't spend much time talking about what those roles look like when they are connected in a healthy way to an apostolic leader. I know that Bethel has good teaching on that topic as I've heard it elsewhere; it would have been ideal to have that laid out in this book as well. That said, this is a minor complaint with an otherwise excellent book.
I've found that reading this book has once again pushed me to examine my heart and attitudes and evaluate how I choose to treat people. The discussion in the book about how we use rules and 'taking offense' as reasons to withhold love from people was very convicting. I recognized once again how much a product of my family and culture I am and how I let unhealthy ways of thinking impact my choices (and especially my choices of how to treat others). CULTURE OF HONOR is clear, concise, and convicting--I plan to purchase copies for a few friends. After reading the book, I want more than ever to see my relationships unhindered by old thinking and old rules--I want everyone I know to be pursuing honor and calling me on to 'the higher things.'
One of the best that Bethel has produced. Highly recommended.
